Smalti has been an important part of the mosaic tradition since Byzantine times. It is produced by melting glass at high temperatures and colouring with mineral oxides. Mexican smalti is produced so that each side has a slightly different colour and texture. The rich colours reflect light and provide a lustrous and durable non-fading finish. There is also a range of iridescent colours, gold finishes and glass pebbles to provide extra sparkle and richness of texture.
