Flower Mosaic Clock

Return to Projects

Materials

  • Wood – clock dome shape
  • Carbon Paper
  • Pink Glass Tiles
  • Blue Glass Tiles
  • White Glass Tiles
  • Mosaic Wheel Nippers
  • PVA Glue
  • Light Grey Grout
  • Pink Acrylic Paint
  • Clock mechanism

Step One
Trace the pattern onto the wood using carbon paper or you can have a go at freehand drawing the pattern. Find the centre of the wood and drill a hole big enough the clock mechanism can go through.

Step Two Cutting and laying the tiles
Important: Make sure you cut the tiles in ice cream container so the tile fragments do not fly across the room.
Place the tile into the nippers so the blades of the nippers are in the middle of the tile. Cut quickly so you hear a “snap” sound not a “crunch” sound.
Cut the pink tiles into quarters and glue them to the border of the wood making sure you place the manufactured edge of the tile on the outside to give you a neat finish.
Cut 1 circle for the top flower and 2 semicircles for the bottom flowers out of white tiles and glue them to the board.
Cut quarter tiles and oblique tiles (refer to photos) for the petals in the blue tiles and glue them to the wood. Tip: work out how you will lay the tiles for one petal and then repeat the same layout for the other petals.
Lay and glue WHOLE white tiles where possible in the background in rows. Then using a pencil, mark the white tiles to show where you need to cut them and cut them to fit the empty spaces on the background and glue them down.
Leave to dry for 24 hours.

Step Three - Grouting
To grout, add enough water to the grout to make it a toothpaste consistency. Using a tile squeegee or sponge apply the grout over the tiles. Clean off with a slightly damp foam sponge only doing one stroke per side of the sponge and then rinse and repeat until the majority of the grout is removed. Do not over sponge because this will remove the grout from the cracks. Let dry for 24 hours. After the mosaic has dried buff the tiles with a rag and vinegar.

Step Four - Painting
Paint the edges of the wood with 2 coats of Pink Acrylic paint and let dry. Attached the clock mechanism and hang your new clock in a favourite place.
