Craft Expo Textile

Creative Challenge set to showcase Australia’s best

Bernina Australia has thrown down the creative gauntlet to some of Australia’s most talented textile artists, resulting in a spectacular display of wearable art, wall art and quilts. The display, incorporating 20 stunning pieces will headline the coming CraftExpo Melbourne, October 8th – 11th, 2009 at the Royal Exhibition Building.

Victorian locals and award winning artists, Eileen Campbell of Kew and Mariya Waters of Doncaster will be among those whose work will be featured. The challenge called for the artists to create a piece of artwork, across any medium including textiles, wearable art, quilts that utilised the colour scheme
black, white, red and silver while also incorporating the figure 8. The collection drew a host of inspiring and unique creations, each interpreting the colours and the figure 8 in interesting and diverse ways, but each notable for technical mastery and design inspiration.

Eileen Campbell of Kew created a zany quilt design that utilises the figure 8 as caricatures of little people, complete with legs and arms, telling the world how to ‘Be Creative’. Eileen has been a quilter for most of her life, specialising in machine work using appliqué and embroidery. More recently she began experimenting with textile art giving workshops and lectures in Australia and overseas. Her quilts have won numerous awards both at home and abroad.

Doncaster
’s Mariya Waters created a machine embroidered cut-work “celebr8ory” announcement card for the Creative Challenge. It features the graphic 8 an illuminated letter style and is decorated with Swarovski crystals. Mariya is an International and Australian award winning quilt-maker and teacher. She specialises in hand appliqué with machine quilting and her philosophy on quilting is “If it can be drawn it can be constructed –somehow!”
