Decoupage BasicsPrepare the base that you will be applying the decoupage to. To prepare the piece, lightly sand all over removing any imperfections, paint the background and then seal the piece with vanish. If the decoupage motif is not going to cover the entire base piece, think about different ways of painting the background such as sponging, dragging or crackle techniques to create an interest.
Seal the decoupage papers with Modge Podge and let it dry. Carefully cut the decoupage motifs out of the backing paper. Use different types of scissors including manicure scissors or embroidery scissors to cut out the motifs. You can also use a sharp craft knife and cutting mat.
Arrange your motifs on the prepared base until you are satisfied with the layout. Once happy use a decoupage medium such as modge podge to “glue” the pieces to the base. Let the piece dry.
To finish, you can apply many coats of vanish with a light sanding in between coats until you have a glassy appearance, this can be up to 15 to 20 coats of vanish. Another finish is using a product called “liquid glass” this is an epoxy resin product where you mix 2 bottles of product together and then pour the mixed liquid over the finished piece. This product is mainly used for flat surfaces. With either finishes you need to allow the piece to dry in a dust free environment.
